Although the book that this blog was created for, Beyond Oppression: Colonization and the Language of Heroes, focuses almost exclusively on the genocides, exploitation and colonization of Africa and The Americas from the late 1400's to the present, the video in this post, which was produced by The Real News, provides an excellent documentary overview of how colonization begins and evolves, and how again and again heroic language is used to brainwash and subjugate native inhabitants in order to sustain colonization

The Fatal Use of Heroic Language Erupts in Virginia

White supremacy is real – it does not happen by accident.  And through denial and willful omission each new generation of White supremacists  keep the oppressive legacies of slavery and colonization alive and well by funding educational institutions that have historical ties to White supremacist organizations like the KKK and others.  The University of Virginia is just one of many examples.

The propagation of supremacist ideology is achieved in large part by the consistent use of utopian heroic language, like Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, which was first used by Ronald Reagan, and which infuses an extreme (false) patriotism and nationalism, carried out through organized sociopolitical activism.  In the video below, Amy Goodman talks with an associate professor at the University of Virginia (UVA) about UVA’s historical ties to the KKK and White nationalists, like Richard Spencer and Jason Kessler, who spearheaded the fatal “Unite the Right” march occurring in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend, which was spearheaded by Spencer and Kessler, who are both graduates of UVA.
